Portugal is the new red!

2004 Duque de Viseu Vinho Tinto DOC, Dão, Portugal $12.85 LCBO #546309

Want in on a secret? Portugal is the world’s newest hidden location for delicious quality table wines. Over the past 10 years, Portugal has spread its wings and begun to go through a winemaking revolution. Along with its amazing port, it is now producing some fantastic wines from locally grown grapes. The best part for us is that the prices haven’t caught up to the quality.

This week’s wine is a prime example of Portugal’s improved wine making culture. The 2004 Duque De Viseu is a fantastic red wine made from a blend of several grapes dominated by the local varieties of Touriga-National, Tinta-Roriz and Alfrocheiro. To give you some context, these are the same grapes used to make port. The wine has wonderful aromas of red currants and violets and flavours of plum, pepper and oak. This is the perfect wine to pair with churrasco chicken. (If you want to get specific…the chicken from Churrasco on St. Clair Avenue West in Toronto. Even the thought of it makes my mouth water!).

Yet the best part about this wine is the price. At $12.85 this wine taste more like a wine triple the price. This is definitely a wine that I would rush to the LCBO for…but that’s just my opinion. Let me know what you think.
